Chapinero, Colombia: Gangs Targeting Universities and Schools for Sex Exploitation

On June 19, 2013 Caracol reported instances of sexual exploitation occurring near universities and schools in Chapinero. According to Mayor Mauricio Jaramillo, several gangs have been identified by authorities as specifically targeting universities and schools within the area. According to Jaramillo, trafficking networks particularly target universities with student populations coming from the provinces, as they are seen as more gullible and easier to seduce into the world of prostitution.

Additionally, authorities have identified other areas being targeted, including Plaza de Lourdes, where gangs are able to take advantage of its largely transient population of around one million people to sexually exploit children. Read Article
