Carnaval in Pernambuco, Brazil, Has 17% More Police in 2013, Authorities Say

On January 30, 2013, NE10 reported that police presence will be increased this year for the state of Pernambuco’s annual Carnaval celebration.  From February 3-13, authorities announced that over 42,000 police units will be deployed in the Recife Metropolitan Area, including over 32,000 policemen and 4,500 firefighters (firefighters are counted within the police ranks).  This number marks a 17% increase from last year’s Carnaval.  Recife alone will have two command centers throughout the celebration, while nearby cities will have temporary posts to help with crowd control.  Read Article
