Brazilian Federal Police Opens Operation to Combat Federal Financial Crimes

On March 27, 2013, the Brazilian Federal Police (Polícia Federal) concluded an investigation into crimes involving federal financial agencies. Codenamed “Operation Pícaro,” Federal Police targeted two groups in particular: one group was accused of defrauding the Brazilian Federal Economic Register (Caixa) to obtain money to purchase automobiles, while the other received the autos. The operation involved 75 federal policemen, leading to the arrest of at least three people, while police search for at least thirteen more. The Federal Police also worked with authorities in the state of Maranhão, where they continue to search for suspects.  Read Article
