Brazilian Businesswoman Faces Human Trafficking Charges

On February 21, 2013, A Tarde reported that Carmem Topschall, a businesswoman in the Brazilian state of Bahia, is defending her innocence as she is investigated for an illegal adoption scheme that carries human trafficking charges.  She faced questioning this morning related to the children, who she says she legally adopted from the town of Monte Santo, about 375 kilometers from Salvador, the capital.  One of the children will be interviewed later today.  According to the inquiry, she had also sent the children to São Paulo for undisclosed reasons.  She has had to move from her hometown of Pojuca to avoid harassment regarding the case.  Read Article
