Brazil: State of Maranhão Reports 6,500 Cases of AIDS Since 1985

On January 27, 2013, G1 reported that the state of Maranhão has reported 6,505 cases of AIDS since 1985, with two-thirds of the cases being male, the other third female.  The same study also reported that the majority of the cases happened in the age group 25-49.  Statistics from the State Health Department showed that of the 217 cities in Maranhão, 182 of them reported at least one case.  The report also made note of the number of sexual partners:  25.3% of the age group 15-49 reported having ten or more sexual partners in the past year.  Also, after the first sexual encounter with a partner, contraceptive use falls significantly, according to the statistics.  Read Article
