Brazil: Settlers Facing Eviction Occupy Lula Institute in São Paulo

On January 23, 2013, O Globo reported that close to 100 people threatened with eviction in the Milton Santos Settlement in Americana, São Paulo state, occupied the Lula Institute in the capital’s South Zone.  Four supporters of the occupation have also declared a hunger strike.  The protesters seek immediate action from Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff to avoid being evicted from their settlement, a settlement they say was created under the Lula Administration.  Paulo Albuquerque, one of the settlers, said the protesters will remain at the Lula Institute until they receive a formal response.  The eviction notice has existed since June of last year.  Read Article
