Brazil: Politicians Unfaithful to Political Parties Could Face Fines

On October 15, 2013, Estado de Minas (EM) reported that politicians associated with roughly one-third of Brazilian political parties could face fines for changing their party affiliation in recent months.  Such a practice is common:  EM reports that no less than 67 of the Chamber of Deputies’ 513 members in the last few weeks.  Different parties will set different levels of fines based on size:  the Progressive Republican Party (PRP), though a small party, could fine its members between 12 and 48 times what the member has earned as a representative of the party.  Read Article
