Brazil: Deforestation in Amazon has tripled in first quarter of 2012

In the first three months of this year lost 388 km2 of Amazon deforestation, nearly triple the same period last year (135 km2), according to official figures released today by the government. The National Institute for Space Research (INPE) reported that were cleared in January 21.89 km2, 306 km2 and 59.6 km2 in February in March, as revealed by partial images of the satellite. The highest figure was recorded in Mato Grosso (Midwest), with 285.46 km2 in February. Read Article
