Brazil, deforestation continues at alarming rate in Amazon, up sixfold since last year

The Brazilian Amazon lost in one month about 593 square miles of forest, according to official documents. Deforestation in the Amazon rainforest in Brazil has increased sixfold since last year, as revealed by satellite images of the Brazilian government. These photographs show that between March and April 2011 destroyed 593 square miles of forest, compared to 103 destroyed in the same months last year.The worst affected area is the state of Mato Grosso, the center of soy plantations in Brazil.
