BlackBerry to begin production in Argentina

The Canadian company that owns BlackBerry, Research in Motion (RIM), announced yesterday that it will begin producing its smart phones in Tierra del Fuego, Argentina starting this October, reports cronista.com. After months of resisting setting up a plant in Argentina, RIM finally caved due to monetary and market share losses they’ve suffered after their competitors launched local production sites in South America. The project investment will total 23 million USD. Officials hope to manufacture 750,000 phones in the first year of production. The growing demand for these smart phones in Argentina has greatly fueled RIM’s decision to begin local production, along with tax breaks they will receive from the government. RIM estimates that the national demand for BlackBerry’s in Argentina is 70%, and they hope to fulfill each request. Argentina is the 9th country in the world to produce BlackBerry phones and the second in South America after Brazil.
