Ayacucho, Peru: Students Take Over University

According to Peru21.pe, on Friday July 1st thousands of students from the San Cristobal University in Huamanga clashed with police in the Plaza de Huamanga as they tried to take over the university by force. Officials say that police used tear gas while trying to quell the demonstrators. Students responded by throwing different kinds of projectiles at police, officials add. Peru21 reports that it is unknown if there were any injured in the protest on the fifth day of the strike by Huamanga students. The students are calling for the resignation of the president and vice-president of the university whom they accuse of using tuition and exam administration money to pay the staff, report other officials. Students say the money should be used for campus infrastructure and other improvements in education.Read Article
