At Least 30 Mayors Face Impeachment Proceedings in Piauí, Brazil

On January 21, 2013, 180 Graus reported that a wave of currently-serving mayors face charges of electoral fraud in the Brazilian state of Piauí.  The Federal Regional Tribunal in the state has called 22 special elections since the 2008 elections, after fraud was discovered in each case.  Three special elections will be held in the next three months in the towns of Batalha, Isaías Coelho and Simões, as required by the judgments handed down.  Ninety politicians elected in 2012 will respond to questions surrounding electoral irregularities, with 36 of them elected this past October.  The charges range from buying votes to manipulating polling machines.   Read Article
