A report released in May by the U.S. State Department shows that Argentina plays a prominent role in the trafficking of women and children for the sex slave industry, according to infobae.com. The report shows Argentina is still a popular destination for sex tourism, and a country of origin, transit and destination for human trafficking of prostitution and labor. Argentina is considered a level 2 in terms of human trafficking, meaning their government has failed to comply with the minimum standards of the Trafficking Victims Protection Act. The majority of trafficking victims come from the Triple Border Argentina shares with Brazil and Paraguay, the poorest northern provinces, Peru and the Dominican Republic and are brought to upper class, urban areas in the central and southern parts of the country. Argentina is also a high transit country for Paraguayan sex slaves trafficked to Chile, Brazil, Mexico and Western Europe.
