Argentina, Negative DNA results don’t dissuade the Grandmothers

A press conference was called today by the president of the Grandmothers of the Plaza de Mayo, Estela de Carlotto, after DNA results came back negative over the weekend that would have linked the Noble Herrera brother and sister to families of disappeared children during the dictatorship in the 70s and 80s. The Noble Herrera siblings, adopted children of the owner of the Grupo Clarin media empire, have been fighting genetic testing for years, but volunteered to submit DNA this month to finally end the harassment and debate. Carlotto said in the press conference that there is no such thing as a negative result, genetic information is “scarce” right now and the Noble Herreras could be connected to a number of other families that didn’t know their children were pregnant when they disappeared. The Grandmothers are still hoping that further tests will link the siblings to families of missing children and that genetic samples from more families will become available. After the results were released, it was demanded that Carlotto and president Cristina Kirchner apologize to the siblings.
