Daniel Torres was found guilty today in Córdoba and sentenced to 14 years in prison for murdering his stepdaughter’s girlfriend, reports infobae.com. He was charged and convicted of aggravated manslaughter with the use of a weapon after shooting Natalie Gaitán with a shotgun on March 6, 2010, for being in a lesbian relationship with his teenage stepdaughter. The plaintiff’s lawyer had fought for an 18-year prison sentence, calling the murder a hate crime and claiming that Torres killed Gaitán because of her sexual orientation. For both judges in the trial and the prosecutor, however, the crime was an act of domestic violence with no relation to sexual orientation. The case has been an icon for groups associated with gay rights, and the Comunidad Homosexual Argentina still believes the murder was a hate crime.
