Argentina, Call for change in judicial system after 2 human traffickers set free

Posted on June 10, 2011 • Filed under: Argentina, Crime, Human Smuggling

Director of the Department of Human Trafficking, Daniela Acosta, calls for a change in the Argentine judicial system after two men from Entre Ríos were released today and acquitted of charges of sexual exploitation of minors and running a brothel. The Federal Court absolved the charges even after one of their young victims testified against them and evidence was presented from a raid conducted last March at the “Tragos Checho” brothel in Gualeguaychú. Acosta told missionesonline.net that the current punishment and legal treatment for human traffickers is despicable. She says the judicial system cannot rely only on a victim’s testaments to convict offenders and the punishment for human trafficking needs to be more severe than a couple year prison sentence.
