Arequipa, Peru: Blocked Road, Strike in Arcata

RPP.com.pe reports residents of Arcata, in the Cayarani District of the Condesuyos province, who have been on strike for 72 hours, just blocked the entrance of the road to the area. Residential officials say they are protesting the pollution from the mining company of Ares S.A.C. and the failure to implement promised projects that would help 200 families of the area out of extreme poverty. The town’s technical advisor says he has asked the mining representatives for an environmental impact study, a study of dam water and an analysis of the raw chemical materials used to extract gold, silver and zinc. Also, residents are waiting for mining representatives to implement the promises of helping genetically improve the alpaca species, contribute to the trout process, and help reduce child malnutrition. Officials say mining representatives are refusing to continue dialogue with the community, and therefore an indefinite strike is in place.Read Article
