Ambato Ecuador: Police remove street vendors in downtown area, confiscate goods, Merry Christmas

elcomercio.com reported – AMBATO, ECUADOR – CLASHES BETWEEN STREET VENDORS AND POLICE
On the downtown streets of Ambato, street vendors and police clash in effort by police to remove 3,500 vendors. There were at least 100 police involved in the removal operation and much of the vendor’s stock of merchandise was confiscated. Police installed metal fences to keep people from using the sidewalks. One vendor was heard yelling “We are not stealing from anybody. Let us sell our products so we can support our families!” There was at least one arrest of an individual during the pushing and shoving between police and vendors. The city reported the merchants were violating an ordinance. It wants many of them to move to sales centers where there are more than 800 vacant spots. Read Article
