Airport in Cancun, Mexico a major hub along drug route to Europe

After the arrest of a Mexican at the Leonardo da Vinci airport in Rome, Italy on May 8, 2012, it appears the international Cancun airport is a major stopping point along a drug route from Latin America to Europe. The Mexican suspect had travelled from Cancun to Rome with 14 kilograms of high-purity cocaine in a suitcase, according to Yucatan a la Mano. This amount has a market value of two million euros. The female arrested in the incident, at 45 years old, has not been named. It appears the airport is ideal for drug trafficking because of the complicity of federal security agents, as well as airport employees. The Cancun airport is the second most frequented airport in Mexico, but the most important in Latin America for international travellers. In 2009, model Maria Noel Lopez Iglesias (21) attempted to fly from Argentina to Cancun with 55 kilos of cocaine. Read Article
