Heavier Restrictions on Cigarettes in Colombia

•The Vice minister of Health of Colombia, Beatriz Londoño, spoke about the Convenio Marco para el Control del Tabaco as reported by eltiempo.com.
•The agreement will focus on areas such as the prohibition of smoking in public areas, sale of cigarettes, and the advertisement of tobacco products.
•Colombia has some of the lowest prices on cigarettes in South America making the rise in prices necessary to dissuade children and the poor from buying them.
•Taxes placed on the tobacco industry will be used to help fund programs for the awareness of the harmful effects of cigarettes.
•Although companies are attempting to place emblems of their products in order to avoid the law against advertisement to be in effect, the vice minister assured that they were working to find a legal way to control this practice. Read Article
