Ecuador: Native Primates Endangered

eltelegrafo.com.ec reported that of 22 species of primates in Ecuador, 11 of them are believed to be threatened of endangerment. The spider monkey and the capuchin monkey are critically endangered. The estimate is there may only be 100 spider monkeys existing in the wild. Hunting, the wildlife trade, disease and loss of habitat are the main threats to primates. Also, female spider monkeys and white capuchins have breed one offspring every three years.

The Ministry of Environment is working on a plan to protect the country’s primates. Stella de la Torre, dean of Biological Sciences at Universidad San Francisco, reports that education is one of the keys. She has called for an implemented plan that involves citizens working for the conservation of primates and their habitat. A recent national census was carried out of the primates in November.
