Ecuador: Puerto Bolivar destined to become largest container terminal in Latin America

joc.com reported a Turkish port operator is determined to transform an Ecuadorian port, most well-known as one of the world’s largest shipment points for bananas, into the largest container terminal in Latin America.

Yilport Holding, a subsidiary of the Istanbul-based Yildirim Group, has secured the rights to Puerto Bolivar in Machala City, Ecuador, a city near the Gulf of Guayaquil often referred to as the “Banana Capital of the World.”
Puerto Bolivar is the second Yilport terminal in the Western Hemisphere.

In a 50-year concession signed Tuesday, Yilport committed to invest $750 million in the port over the course of a five-phase development period aimed at transforming Puerto Bolivar’s into Latin America’s largest container terminal capable of handling 2.5 million 20-foot-equivalent units a year.
