Ecuador: National Protests Planned for March 19, 2015 by unions and NGO’s

WSJ.com/ Mercedes Alvaro / reported organizations representing indigenous people, workers unions and nongovernment organizations announced plans Friday for national demonstrations next week to protest President Rafael Correa’s policies.

Analysts say the protests, planned for Thursday in Quito and several other cities in Ecuador, would be a measure of discontent against Mr. Correa, who has enjoyed strong approval ratings since coming to office in 2007, but is now facing growing economic challenges due to the collapse in oil prices.

Protest organizers say the demonstrations grow out of a number of issues, including union concerns that the government is trying to divide union workers and worries that the administration is trying to criminalize protests. Read Article
