Araçatuba, Brazil is Route for Trafficking in Persons, Drugs

On July 14, 2013 Folha da Região Noticias reported that the Marechal Rondon (SP-300) and Elyeser Montenegro Magalhães (SP-463) highways, which attract drug dealers and make Araçatuba a rural trafficking center, are also being used as a route for human trafficking and sexual exploitation. This finding was made based on information from state and federal highway police.

Last year, the Center for Combating Trafficking in Persons assisted 77 victims in the state of São Paulo. Of these, 18 were rescued from situations of sexual exploitation and 59 from situations of forced labor. So far this year, the agency has already handled cases with 217 victims. Read Article
