Human Trafficking Not Included in 13-Point Agenda Between Bolivia, Chile

On June 2, 2013 FM Bolivian reported that the topic of immigrant smuggling and human trafficking is not included in the on-going 13-point agenda between Bolivia and Chile. The agenda items do deal with border issues, including border integration, free movement and physical integration. However, the issue of border security cooperation is related to the control of drug trafficking, which is the tenth agenda point.

The agenda was established in July 2006 between Bolivian President Evo Morales and then president of Chile Michelle Bachelet. However, the two governments still have not achieved concrete results in the sixth agenda point, which is the Bolivian maritime claim to achieve a sovereign outlet to the Pacific. After Bachelet’s term ended, President Sebastian Piñera resumed talks and was able to present concrete proposals on the maritime issue with Bolivia.
