Ecuador: Audit of Media companies reveals 50 percent not following salary laws

Andes.info.ec reported that in the complaint of several journalists and media workers, since last October, the Labor Ministry conducted 700 inspections of media, which resulted in that 50% (350) of them meet labor standards set by the State. Not paying the salary sector to reporters, no overtime pay and have no current contract workers are the main causes that the Labor Ministry found in inspections nationwide.
On December 22, the government of Ecuador set the salary for journalists degree in USD 800 per month, while non-graduates communicators have a salary of USD 670. The sanctions range from USD 200-20 Unified Basic Wage and the media will continue to breach month being punished because “if it were sanctioned to the next month and if not paid the wage sector will be punished” said Francisco Vacas, Minister of Labor Relations.
