Ecuador: 2014 local elections to have between 40,000 – 50,000 candidates vying for positions

Andes.info.ec reported that next April 26th, the board members of the Ecuadorian National Electoral Council (CNE, Spanish acronym) will meet in the town of Tena (Napo province) to get to know and approve the calendar and operational plan for the local elections of 2014.

In the elections that will take place in the month of February, 2014, Ecuadorians must elect 5,646 positions (10,758 including alternates); 221 mayors, 23 prefects, 552 city councilors, 747 rural councilors, and 4,080 rural parish board members, according to information from the CNE.

In accordance with the projection—based on the number of parties and candidates that participated in the elections from last February—between forty and fifty thousand candidates will participate in the elections of 2014, Domingo Paredes, director of the CNE, told the Andes Agency.

For this reason, the CNE will set the “schedule, planning, execution, follow up, and evaluation of the electoral calendar and the electoral operational plan,” stated Paredes during the ceremony to deliver credentials to assembly members elected in Pichincha.

Looking forward to the following elections, the CNE has improved the composition of human talent and is improving its technological platform, said Paredes.

Like it did in February, República Dominicana will again offer technical assistance and training to carry out the quick count. The Central American country will provide Ecuador software and between one and two thousand machines for the job.
