Galapagos Islands now officially rid of used tire pollution

With the last shipment of 4400 tires made the evening and last night in San Cristobal Island, Galapagos Islands are free of the dangers that the accumulation of this waste is inadequate for both human health and fragile ecosystems of the islands.

In an exercise that led the Galapagos National Park Service (GNPS) and counted with the collaboration of multiple institutions in the 4 inhabited islands of the archipelago were able to collect, sort and transport to the mainland more than 30,000 tires for decades were within Galapagos without any treatment, risking the health of residents and polluting the ecosystem.

Used tires that were moved to the mainland are received by the Ministry of Environment, who through the National Waste Management, delivers them to collection centers where they become raw material for the manufacture of our products such as blankets and car carpets.

Since August, the GNP began to evacuate to the mainland all tires of motorcycles, cars, trucks, dump trucks, bicycles and even Santa Cruz, Isabela, San Cristobal and Floreana, in several shipments in a motorboat transport load.
