More than 64,000 hectares of illicit crops growing in Colombia, UN reports

The United Nations (UN) reports that illicit crops in Colombia cover 64,000 hectares, an increase of 2,000 from the 2010 figure. Previously, the number had been declining, with 80,000 in 2007 and 62,000 in 2010, El Imparcial reports. However, the trend seems to be reversing and illicit crops are once again on the rise. According to the UN report, 52% of the illegal crops are located in the south of Colombia, such as the Nariño, Guaviare and Putumayo areas. Experts believe the number rose perhaps because fewer crop fields were dismantled during the same time period. Read Article
