Guayaquil Ecuador: 16 areas prone to flooding

Statements reiterate the need to find permanent solutions to flooding in a city like Guayaquil, located 4 meters above sea level and difficult to evacuate quickly.

“People tend to throw garbage to sewage systems, and the city is prone to fill with invasions, where the works are almost always slow in coming, causing waterlogging annual personal tragedies such as occurred on Thursday night in the Block 3 of Bastion Popular, “said the president of the Canton Company of Water and Sewerage Guayaquil (Ecapag) Rodrigo Andrade.

A map prepared by the Ecapag said in 2000 more than 47 permanent sites susceptible to flooding. So virtually all the city was flooded.

To plan the necessary works for the city to be flooded least Ecapag, with input from the Catholic University of Guayaquil, between 1999 and 2000, developed the storm drainage master plan for the north and south of the city, Interagua which was given to the start of the concession to run.
