26.6% Mexicans wouldn’t allow foreigners to stay in their house

Refugee rights organizations are calling for reflection and citizen participation in Mexico for June 20, World Refugee Day, La Jornada reports. Refugees face intolerant attitudes, discrimination and challenges to integrating in Mexican society despite a series of new laws protecting refugees and migrants. According to the 2010 National Survey on Discrimination, 26.6% of Mexicans would not allow a foreigner to stay in their house. Last year Mexican authorities recognized 200 refugees from 28 countries, mainly from Latin America and the Caribbean, as well as from the Middle East, Asian and Africa. Read article.
