1,200 to 1500 Colombians arriving in Ecuador monthly due to violence

The number of Colombians entering Ecuador to escape violence in their country has risen steadily over the past two years to put in between 1,200 and 1,500 per month, the UN said today. Currently there are 55,000 recognized refugees in Ecuador, according to which the Government has provided the High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), the highest in Latin America, compared to only 390 of 2000. Of these 98% are Colombians and 70% women and children fleeing their country after the spouses were recruited in illegal groups or killed, or is it single mothers, according to UNHCR. Read Article
