U.S. Medical Student Seth Thomas found dead, hiking accident in Cusco Peru

MEDICAL STUDENT SETH THOMAS FOUND DECEASED – SERVING AS MEDICAL VOLUNTEER IN PERU

Seth ThomasAfter extensive searching for 24 year old medical student, Seth Alexander Thomas from the United States, he was found deceased on June 25, 2017, in the Cusco Department of Peru. Seth had begun a hike Friday afternoon on June 23, 2017, to Cerro picol, San Jerónimo, in Cusco at about two in the afternoon. He did not return at sunset as planned and a search began early Saturday morning.

Search teams were unsuccessful in locating the hiker on Saturday. The search and rescue mission resumed Sunday morning with professional search teams. Apparently, Mr. Thomas fell from a ledge while hiking resulting in injuries which caused his death. His body was located at about 1:30 pm local time by Peruvian Police on Sunday afternoon. An autopsy will be conducted. Seth Alexander Thomas had just completed his first year of medical school at the University of South Carolina. He arrived in early June in Peru to serve a short term medical mission assignment.
