Ecuador: Dengue Cases Up in Three Provinces but down across the country

Eluniverso.com reported dengue cases are on uptick so far in 2014. The three provinces most impacted are Esmeraldas, Guayas and El Oro Province. The number of cases is higher then for the same time in 2013. In other provinces, the number of cases has diminished. So far in 2014 (26 weeks) there have been 9,705 cases nationwide, compared to 10,414 during the same period last year. That’s a decrease of almost 7%.

In Esmeraldas, there have been 670 cases in urban sectors. Humans become infected with dengue from the bite of the Aedes aegypti mosquito whose larvae breed in stagnant water. In El Oro Province, three cantons are under surveillance because there have been at least 1,200 dengue cases this year. Read Article
