Ecuador: Trial for Shaman in death of U.S. citizen recesses for two weeks after two days of proceedings

TRIAL IN DEATH OF YOUNG U.S. CITIZEN DURING AYAHUASCA CEREMONY ALLEGEDLY MURDERED

The trial of shaman Miguel Chiriap in Macas Ecuador has been continued for the second time. Originally set for March 30th, 2017, was continued until May 18th, 2017. The trial finally began on May 18th and after two days of proceedings has been recessed for two weeks.

Leslie Allison a 35-year old U.S. citizen died during an Ayahuasca ceremony on January 12, 2016, in which Mr. Chiriap, a Shuar Indian was in charge of the ceremony. Leslie became quite ill during the event and allegedly Miguel Chiriap was the last person with her before she died. No medical assistance was sought for Ms. Allison and authorities were not notified until the day after her death. A number of participants left the ceremony when revealed the young American died.

An autopsy determined that her death occurred at approximately 10:00 pm on January 12, 2016. Originally her death was reported as an accident with possible reactions to the Ayahuasca brew, possible herbs, and or a preexisting medical issues. However, the autopsy revealed that Leslie Allison died from a broken neck due to severe blunt force trauma Her body also had sustained “massive bruising” including not only the external body but to her lungs. She also had a gash on her chin.

When authorities were summoned on Friday, Leslie’s corpse had been moved to a hidden area and her clothes had been changed. After an investigation authorities in Ecuador charged Miguel Chiriap with “culpable homicide”.
