Ecuador: Agrocalidad buried onions that had been affected by pests

Freshplaza.com reported The Ecuadorian Agency for Agro Quality Assurance, Agrocalidad, buried 1,200 bags of onions seized in recent days, after detecting various pests that threaten crops in Loja and Ecuador.

The report indicated that authorities found pests, such as fruit flies, larvae, and even a fungus and a bacterium in the confiscated items that could put the crops in the area at risk. “These three pests are a risk for our production.”

Acoording to the Plant Protection Act, the onions had been buried to prevent the spread of pests. “124 tonnes were buried in the landfill.” He also said that these products had previously been seized in four vehicles with forged papers for which there was an ongoing administrative process.
