Ecuador: DNA tests to determine if remains are those of missing U.S. citizen

MISSING U.S. EXPAT’S BODY MAY HAVE BEEN FOUND NEAR VILCABAMBA IN LOJA PROVINCE, ECUADOR. DNA TESTS ARE BEING BEING CONDUCTED

John Thomas Ham DevotoOn March 24, 2017 lahora.com reported that the human remains were being exhumed from a clandestine cemetery by authorities in Chirusco, Palmira neighborhood, Quinara parish. This small village is located about 14 km from Vilcabamba in Loja Province. Sixteen officials were involved in the removal of the corpse to take body samples and to bury the body. They believed results of DNA to be ready in about 20 days. To date there has been no announcement of the testing outcome. The body was located nearly ten feet below ground and took officials about two hours to excavate.

The search involves missing U.S. expat John Thomas Ham Devoto who disappeared on January 14, 2007, from Quinara parish. Mr. Ham Devoto was a farmer who had lived in Ecuador for about 25 years at the time he vanished. His family and friends reported he disappeared when he was on his way to pick up his wife at the airport in Guayaquil.
