Rio de Janeiro, Brazil: Pope Condemns Latin American Attempt to Liberalize Drug Usage

estadao.com.br reported on July 24, 2013 that Pope Francisco criticized Latin American countries such as Uruguay liberalizing drug usage. After visiting a hospital in Rio de Janeiro, which cares for drug addicts, the Pope labeled drug traffickers as “merchants of death”. Rather than liberalization, the Pope suggested the use of education as a possible solution. In 2007, Pope Benedict XVI visited Brazil and addressed as well, the issue of drug trafficking.
