According to ElComercio.com Gonzalo Marroquin, president of the Inter American Press Association (SIP) said that in Ecuador freedom of speech and the press is further deteriorating, possibly becoming the worst treatment in South America. In a statement release in Quito, Marroquin criticizes the president and his government about the recent restrictions aimed at the freedom, expression and control of the media. He also mentioned that legislation, still waiting for the approval of officials, called the Communications Act will give the government even more power over the press. Any restrictions will only have to pass approval of the Parliament, controlled by President Rafael Correa’s party. Marroquin added that the current government rules with authoritarianism and intolerance. Media restrictions are most common in Venezuela, Ecuador, Bolivia, and Argentine Marroquin states. The SIP will send a mission to Ecuador in July or August to attempt conversation with the government.Read Article
