Cuba seizes nearly 1.5 tons of drugs in first five months of 2012

Cuba has seized 1.44 tons of drugs during the first months of 2012, primarily along its coasts, El Nuevo Herald reports. Most of the drugs are marijuana packets that enter along coastal points, where Caribbean traffickers can easily avoid controls and checkpoints. Between January and May 2012, officials were able to intercept 24 drug operations, principally concerning cocaine, that took place in airports around the country. The Minister of the Interior insists drug trafficking organizations and mafias do not exist on the island; the drugs were simply brought into the country to meet the domestic demand.
