City of Belém, Brazil, Reports 100 Murders in 45 Days of 2013

On February 22, 2013, Diário do Pará reported that there were 100 murders reported in the metropolitan region of Belém, state capital of Pará, between January 2 and February 15 of this year. The rate is equal to about two murders per day. The murders do not favor a certain kind, and there seems to be a balance between murders, murder-robberies, revenge killings, and shootings. The most notable killings involved two separate incidents in which a mother and her child were killed in the state, and another shooting during Carnaval in the towns of Marco and Marituba, where young people were gunned down while celebrating in the ceremonial blocos.
