Brazil: Recordings from Operação Porto Seguro Case Show Relationship Between Politician, Businessman

On January 28, 2013, Veja reported that tapes acquired from the Operação Porto Seguro investigation show a relationship between José Dirceu (PT), Chief of Staff to former President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, and Gilberto Miranda, businessman and Workers’ Party supporter.  The recordings show the intimate relationship between Miranda and the PT strongman, including benefits from the construction of a private port in Santos, on the coast of São Paulo state.  Construction of the port is a focal area of Operação Porto Seguro, a case in which numerous members of the ruling PT are under investigation for the falsification of technical reports to gain benefits.  Read Article
