Brazil: Operation Paraná Summer Concludes, Police Report Statistics

On January 18, 2013, the State Police of Paraná concluded Operation Paraná Summer (Operação Verão Paraná), declaring it a success.  Between December 20, 2012 and January 17, 2013, police interacted with more than 10,000 people, arresting about 400.  It also seized 6 kilograms of marijuana, 81 grams of cocaine and 490 rocks of crack cocaine.  The prime objective of the operation, according to Colonel Cezar Alberto Sousa, was to ensure the safe passage of thousands of tourists as they headed to the coast for summer holidays.  He cited better pay and equipment as prime factors for the success of the operation.  The second phase begins with the start of the Carnaval season, in the month of February.  Read Article
