U.S. DEA assists in Mexico-Italy drug trafficking ring bust

El Sur reports 34 people have been arrested in Sicily in an operation labeled ‘Monterrey’ in relation to a drug ring operating between Italy and Mexico. 11 of those detained belonged to the Brancaccio mafia clan in Palermo. The remaining individuals were Italians residing in Mexico. These arrests are a result of six years of research and investigation and began when 500 kilos of high-purity cocaine were found in a Mexican truck on July 28, 2006. This discovery was one of the largest made by Italian police in the last ten years. The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration assisted the Italian Anti-Mafia Force in locating and capturing the suspects. They face charges of drug trafficking and importation. Read Article
