Border Patrol to build a substation in New Mexico
Some landowners in the area did not want the Border Patrol was established on that site that is private land, but the place was built on federal lands closest to the border.
The U.S. Border Patrol will open a new post in southwestern New Mexico, just over 30 kilometers (20 miles) from the border. Friday’s announcement ends months of controversy over where the border crossing would be built. Border officials said the construction would take between four and six months. Doug Mosier, spokesman for the agency, said the substation is necessary because it is increasing the pace of immigration and drug trafficking in this desolate region known as the “Bootheel” because of its resemblance to the heel of a boot that inserted into the territory of Mexico.
