U.N. Criticizes Economic Influence in Bolivian Judiciary

The influence of economic power in the justice system is a deep and ongoing problem in Bolivia, Denis Racicot, a representative of the United Nations High Commission on Human Rights to Bolivia, said yesterday. “One of the current problems that comes into play for an ordinary citizen regarding access to justice, and the ability to get a response from judges in the judicial system to a particular problem, is economic power,” Racicot said. “In other instances, obtained through complaints and comments from people, there’s a vision that economic power in civil matters may be what ultimately determines the solutions, and the person without economic resources is seriously disadvantaged.” Read Article
