Study Reveals Brazil Ranks Number One Consumer of Crack Worldwide

On May 24, 2013, Globo reported that according to a study by the Federal University of São Paulo, Brazil is considered the number one consumer of crack worldwide. The study reveals that about one million users live with their families and the number could potentially double, if considering the addicts who live on the streets. Regina Miki; the National Secretariat of Public Security, states the current policy of incarcerating users has been ineffective as drug abuse is a public safety and public health concern. The Civil House of the Presidency of the Republic reports that it has spent U.S $1.2 billion investing in a program to combat the use of crack. Read Article
