Police Seize 4,100 Fish from Commercial Fisherman in Brazil

On March 8, 2013, the state news agency in Mato Grosso do Sul reported that Environmental Police arrested a commercial fishermen who had 4,100 live fish kept as bait.  The fish came from Paraguay, according to the man.  By legislation, professional fishermen may only catch other fish and keep them as bait if they are declared to be Brazilian, the fisherman agrees to sell them in Brazil.  The man was found in the capital city of Campo Grande, and he faces a fine of R$4,700 and could face up to one year in prison.  The fish were released back into the swamp lands near Paraguay.  Read Article
