Peru, crime against tourists in Trujillo

Travelers are reminded to be vigilant when visiting Trujillo. La Republica.pe reported that seventeen tourists have been victimized due to theft or robbery since January through February 13, 2011.
1. The delinquents will often gain the trust of the victim by speaking their language. A third party is brought in to relieve the victim of their belongings.
2. Of the 17 crimes, 15 have been thefts and 2 robberies reported to police.
3. Tourists have been robbed of credit cards and funds at ATMs.
4. Counterfeit bills are being spread to tourists from money changers in the center of Trujillo. Counterfeit coins are also being used.
5. Areas to be especially careful are Huaca del Sol y la Luna, Santa Lucia de Moche, and behind the Cerro Blanco.
