More Than 100,000 March in Chile for Free, Improved Public Education

According to ElComercio.com today, Thursday June 30th in Santiago, Chile more than 100,000 people marched through the streets demanding improvement of the public education system, including lowering costs in Chile. The peaceful marchers made their way to the Ministry of Education and the Presidential Palace. This is one of the largest protests in the last 20 years. . Officials say they no official toll has been released. However, in the final hours of the protest 13 people were arrested as protesters clashed with police. Late into the march, police began throwing tear gas and water on the protesters, who retaliated by ransacking several shops and attempted to occupy the Brazilian Embassy. The protesters also threw sticks and stones at the security officer injuring one policeman. While marching protesters sang, “It will fall, it will fall…the education of Pinochet.”Read Article
